Take a Behind the Scenes Video Tour of The Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge TN

The Visit My Smokies team recently had the chance to travel back in time when we were invited to take a special tour of the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge TN! This extremely popular attraction tells the story of the Titanic’s disastrous maiden voyage in a totally unique way. Meredith Lofton, the host of our Insider’s View video series, got the exclusive chance to interview the Unsinkable Molly Brown, one of the most famous passengers on the ship. Watch the video below to join Meredith and Molly on their behind the scenes look at the Titanic Museum:

Incredible Historical Recreations

The first thing you will notice about the Titanic Museum is that it’s shaped just like the actual ship! The exterior of this massive museum is half the size of the RMS Titanic. However, the rooms inside the museum are full scale and appear just like they would if you were a passenger on the ship in 1912. The rooms are completely historically accurate because the architect who designed the museum was able to use the Titanic’s original blueprints.

The most stunning part of the museum is the Grand Staircase. Painstakingly recreated from years of historical research, the staircase is truly the heart of the ship. In the above video, you will see the staircase decorated for the Christmas season in authentic Edwardian fashion.

When you visit the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge TN, you’re not just a passive observer; you’re part of the story! Every guest at the museum gets a card with biographical information about a real life passenger on the ship. At the end of your journey through the museum, you’ll have the chance to find your passenger’s name on the walls of the Memorial Room to see if you survived the voyage. Being tied to the personal narrative of an actual passenger on the Titanic makes your experience at the museum even more immersive.

Real Titanic Artifacts

The Titanic Museum is home to over 400 artifacts from the RMS Titanic. Everything you see in glass or under a case is a genuine piece of history that was on the ship. The cumulative value of all the artifacts at the museum is four million dollars! The artifacts were found floating in the ocean, on victims’ bodies, or were carried off the ship by survivors.

Many of the artifacts were actually recovered by the owner of the Titanic Museum, John Joslyn. In 1987, Joslyn co-led a six million dollar expedition to the site of the Titanic’s sinking. His team’s 32 dives down to the ship’s wreckage were chronicled in  “Return to Titanic…Live!”, a two hour television special that remains the second highest rated TV documentary in history.

As Meredith notes in the video, the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge TN is a very interactive attraction. On the museum’s promenade deck, guests have the chance to touch an iceberg and to dip their hands into 28 degree salt water, just like the water that awaited many of the ill fated passengers of the Titanic. Kids can steer the ship’s wheel on the captain’s bridge and shovel coal into the furnace in the engine room. Young children will love the Tot Titanic section of the museum where they can play with a smaller version of the captain’s wheel, complete puzzles, and even talk to an electronic polar bear. There is truly something for everyone at the Titanic Museum!
