Apple Barn Apple Fritters
When you sit down to eat at the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant or Applewood Farmhouse Grille, you’ll receive apple cinnamon muffins, apple butter, apple julep, and a basket of apple fritters. People love the food at these restaurants, but they also love the classic appetizers you’ll get too. All of the apples used in these products are picked from the orchard on site.
You can dip the fritters in the apple butter or enjoy them by themselves. No matter how you eat them, you’ll probably eat the whole basket! You might even want to ask for more.
Making Apple Fritters
In the Apple Barn and Cider Mill, there’s a box mix for the apple fritters. You can purchase this mix and make these delicious fried dough balls at home. It may not be quite the same as enjoying them at the restaurants, but it’s the next best thing when you aren’t in the Smokies!
Apple Fritters Recipe
If you haven’t recently been to the Apple Barn and haven’t purchased their mix, you can still make the fritters at home. Here’s the apple fritter recipe:
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 4 Tbsp margarine
- ¼ cup sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 orange, rind and juice
- 1 cup apples, chopped
- 3 cups cake flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Oil for frying
In a mixing bowl, combine milk, egg, sugar, and melted margarine. Add orange juice, rind, chopped apples, and vanilla to the mixture. In a separate bowl, sift flour, baking powder, and salt together. Stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients until they are blended, but do not over mix. Heat oil in a skillet until it reaches 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Put tablespoon size pieces of dough into the oil and fry until golden brown. Remove from oil to drain.
Other Foods at the Apple Barn
