Back in Time to Learn About Ancestors in the Smokies
As we’ve said before, part of the allure of the Smoky Mountains is the chance to see history, to learn about the people who carved a living out of this formerly remote area. When there is a festival to celebrate our ancestors, everyone gets a chance to relive what made those pioneers so special.
This year, the Old Mill is celebrating its 9th Annual Heritage Day on Saturday, September 22, 2012 in Pigeon Forge TN. Bring your family and friends to the Old Mill Square where you can listen to live music, enjoy delicious food and participate in fun and games for everyone. You will be able to see firsthand what a day in the life was life for the first visitors to Sevier County, Tennessee. There will be demonstrations such as making apple butter, sorghum and soap. There will be a free tour of the 182-year old historic Old Mill. You can also see how antique engines and farm tractors were used.
In addition, there will be children’s arts, crafts and games, a petting zoo, and train rides. Plus, there will be mountain music and storytelling with world-class bluegrass, traditional folk songs, storytelling, clogging, twirlers and more. And of course, great Appalachian food, like pinto beans and cornbread, chicken and dumplings, fried green tomatoes, potatoes and onions and more.
Stop by and learn firsthand how the pioneers to Sevier County lived, worked and played. You’ll probably better understand how the people who got here first managed to help shape the wonderful area we call home today.
